Full Bio

Peter Jackson knows both sides of the coin. As a former IDEO client, he saw firsthand the power of design to inspire positive change within the world of finance. He’s now a Partner and co-lead of the financial services portfolio at IDEO, where his work is stitched together by a common thread: As finance increasingly becomes digital and decentralized, as demographics and attitudes change, and as weighty questions about our climate future and tackling inequity arise, many of the clients he works with are facing tremendous threats to their current ways of doing business—but also tremendous opportunities.

That makes it more important than ever for financial institutions to orient themselves around where financial services are going rather than where they have been. There’s a gravity to that challenge that Peter feels uniquely equipped to take on. He experienced the discomfort that comes with stretching to work in a new way when he was an IDEO client, but saw firsthand the value of IDEO’s way of working and the outcomes it produces.

He builds deep relationships with banking, fintech, and insurance clients of various scales and at various life stages and helps them grow new muscles: ones primed to navigate ambiguity, make hard choices, and create a belief in the possible. He has shaped the future of automobile finance for one of the nation’s largest banks and led IDEO’s relationship with a large property and casualty insurance company as it developed new products and services and a venture arm capable of incubating and delivering them.

Prior to joining IDEO, Peter served as senior counselor to now-U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren and as the first Assistant Director for Consumer Engagement at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where he led brand management, digital strategy, and consumer experience. His team created award-winning products and tools, including ones to help consumers manage student loan debt and find a good mortgage.

Peter lives in Berkeley with his wife, Debra; their daughter, Nora; and their dog, Willett, and cat, Ellie. You can find the four of them backpacking the Sierra or exploring the Sonoma coast most weekends (Ellie stays home).
